Text - Psalm 119:105
“There is always light at the end of the tunnel”, are words that we’ve either heard said to us or we’ve said to others in encouragement. It is used to assure people that no matter how rough and challenging things may be at the moment, there will be better days ahead.
Imagine a passageway thousands of kilometers long, built underground with no sunlight coming in; dark, damp and maybe even dangerous. Reaching the exit of this tunnel, difficult and scary as it may be would be the hope anyone would cling to. Scary, of course for fear of staggering, falling, of losing our way or even fear of the unknown.
In life, we all go through tunnels of some sort. It could be a rough patch in our finances, a serious illness or something else. Unlike literal tunnels, there’s no way to determine how long they span and how tough the journey through will be. The only thing that’s certain is the darkness that breeds fear: fear of falling into debts and spiraling into poverty, fear of dying or being permanently incapacitated. There are many examples of tunnels people go through on a daily basis, which cause us fear.
However, we don’t have to grope about in the dark while we’re in our tunnels. Psalms 119:105 describes God’s Word as “a light unto my path”, whether through the valley of the shadow of death or atop the highest mountain.
God knows well the scary dark tunnels we find ourselves in, and how far off we are from the exit; even every possible danger lurking in the darkness and how scary they are.
Isaiah 43:2 says when we go through the fire and the deep waters, He will be with us, so He is always with us. Also “God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all” (1 John 1:5). Light always chases darkness away, and brightens everywhere. Therefore, when God’s light shines in darkness, the darkness never comprehends it! Glory!
The whole point is that, if God’s presence is in the tunnel with us, darkness CANNOT thrive. There’s no stumbling and staggering and no need to worry about unseen trouble. As long, that is, as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. (Heb. 12:2).
We keep our eyes on Jesus by getting into His Word, and staying there until the light of understanding which brings faith shines in our hearts, and things change for good for us! God’s Word brings light, and we must form the habit of intentionally and regularly studying and meditating on it. Of making time as often as we can in a day, not just to skim through a few verses, but to open our hearts to hear what God is saying to you. Light must come on inside us, before it can shine out of us and around us.
To Heart
YES, THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL, BUT GOD HAS ALSO GIVEN US LIGHT IN THE TUNNEL.
